Green Market Square

Green Market Square – the second oldest market in Cape Town

Green Market Square is without a doubt the most beautiful square in Cape Town. Cobblestone streets, historical buildings from different eras, various cafés and a lively flea market are emphasizing this impression.

Green Market Square is said to be the second oldest market in Cape Town and was originally used as a vegetable market. At the square you can find three examples of the Art-Deco style: the Hotel Inn on the Square, the Protea Assurance Building and the Market House. Other buildings can also be dated back to the foundation years of the Mother City. In the West, you can find the first official building of Cape Town – the Old Town House. For a long while, it served as a city hall. Today, it houses a collection of paintings (the Michaelis Collection). The Anglican Church, which was built in 1871, is right next to it.

Green Market Square Flea Market

During the day, there is a flea market taking place on Green Market Square. Merchants from across Africa are mainly selling textiles and handicrafts, such as wooden carved figures, paintings or jewellery. On all corners of the square, you can find restaurants and cafés – perfect to observe the happenings while sipping on a cup of coffee.

Explore the City Centre

From Green Market Square, many small streets branch off in all directions. Only 50 m from Green Market Square, you can find Long Street – the party mile of the city. Around 300 m in the opposite direction, there is Company’s Garden.
