Chapman’s Peak Drive in Cape Town – Scenic Coastal Road

Chapmans Peak Drive
Chapmans Peak Drive

Scenic coastal road between Hout Bay and Noordhoek.

There is nothing better than driving along Chapmans Peak on a beautiful summer day.  This scenic coastal road runs between Hout Bay and Noordhoek. Some of the rocks and deep mountain slopes had to be blasted so that the road could be built. From Cape Town, you can reach Cheapman’s Peak in a 30-minute drive (Hout Bay entrance).

The legendary Chapman’s Peak Drive winds for approximately 9km along the Atlantic Ocean and has around 100 curves. In some areas, this panoramic road is built below rocky overhangs. Some of them are so long that it feels like driving through a tunnel. Rock falls can happen, especially in the rainy season. This can lead to the temporary closure of this coastal road (please always check if the road is open before planning your tip).

Chapman’s Peak Drive is a toll road.

Scenic viewpoints along Chapman‘s Peak Drive

There are a lot of viewpoints dotted along the road where you can park and enjoy breath-taking views and take wonderful photographs of the vast Atlantic Ocean. Before you even reach the entrance (the toll gate) you have a fantastic view of Hout Bay, the harbour, the beach and the prominent mountain in the background – simply astonishing. You can also see Seal Island from here. This can only be topped if a pod of dolphins happens to be swimming by in the water below.

At the end of Chapman‘s Peak Drive you can spot a beautiful sandy beach that stretches for many kilometres – this is Noordhoek beach.
