Safaris near Cape Town

Going on a safari in Africa and seeing elephants, lions or rhinos while travelling through the vast wilderness in a jeep is a dream of many people (including the fantastic photo opportunities).

There are a few game reserve near Cape Town but you can`t compare their size or variety of wildlife with the big and famous reserves in the North and East of South Africa.

Thali Thali Game Lodge – Safari on the West Coast

Thali Thali is a 1-hour drive from Cape Town. This small reserve (1.450 hectares) is located near Langebaan. It is adjacent to the West Coast National Park. A great variety of wildlife calls this reserve their home, e.g., buffaloes, kudus, giraffes, springboks, zebras and ostriches. However, this is not a Big Five reserve. This safari lodge offers chalets, room and luxury tents (glamping).

Fairy Glen Game Reserve – Big Five Safari in Worcester

Fairy Glen is situated only 1,5 hours from the Mother City. In this 22.000 hectare big game reserve you can see the Big Five (elephants, lions, buffaloes, rhinos and leopards). Safari guests can overnight in luxury or standard chalets.

Aquila Game Reserve – Safari in the southern Karoo

Aquila is around 10.000 hectares big and is located in a valley between the Langeberg and Outeniqua Mountains. This game reserve is a 2-hour drive from Cape Town. Here you have the chance to spot lions, elephants, buffaloes, rhinos, leopards, giraffes and many different antelope and bird species in the typical fynbos vegetation of the Western Cape. If you want to stay overnight, you can book a chalet or a room.

Inverdoorn Game Reserve – Big Five Safari in the Klein Karoo

This 10.000 hectare game reserve is located 2,5 hours from Cape Town. Besides the Big Five animals (elephants, lions, rhinos, buffaloes and leopards), you can also see cheetahs, hippos, zebras, ostriches and various antelope species. Overnight guests can choose between chalets, rooms luxury tents.
