Sea Point – idyllically located at the slopes of Signal Hills

Cape Town’s suburb Sea Point is and on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. When people are talking about Sea Point, they usually also mean the areas of Three Anchor Bay, Bantry Bay and Fresnaye. This region is also called the Atlantic Seaboard. In the North, Sea Point is adjacent to Green Point. In the South, it is close to the exclusive beach towns of Clifton und Camps Bay. Sea Point is around 3 km long but only 600 metres wide. The terrain of this suburb is very flat near the ocean, but rises a lot from the Main Road towards Signal Hill.

Character of this Cape Town suburb

Sea Point is a densely populated suburb of Cape Town. Skyscrapers and apartment blocks from the 1960ies and 70ies shape the cityscape, especially near the sea. In the centre area of Sea Point, you can find larger family homes which are replaced by single-storey houses at the foot of Signal Hill. Only at a few specific spots you can still see Victorian houses. Three main streets are leading through the suburb – Beach Road, Main Road and High Level Road.

In Sea Point, there are many middle-class hotels and guest houses. This suburb is very popular with foreign students, language students and tourists.  

On the Main Road, you can find many different cafés, restaurants and fast-food chains.

Sights in Sea Point

Sea Point has a beautiful seaside promenade (around 5 km long), which runs from the former world cup soccer stadium in Green Point to the beginning of Bantry Bay. Here, you can see hundreds of Capetonians jogging and strolling in the early mornings or later afternoons. Next to the promenade is a huge lawn which is great for a picnic, to play ball or just to take a nap and enjoy the sun.  

Due to the rocky nature of this coastline, there are not a lot of beaches where you can swim (only in some rock pools). Therefore, you can rather visit the absolute highlight of Sea Point – the big outdoor swimming pool right on the ocean. It is often referred to as the most beautiful public swimming pool in the world – due to its gorgeous location.
