Kalk Bay is a small fishing village that is situated on the False Bay, between Muizenberg and Simon’s Town. It is a 45-minute drive from Cape Town and the perfect location for a daytrip or a stop-over on the way to Cape of Good Hope (Cape Point Nature Reserve).

This village was founded in 1742. Today, Kalk Bay has several thousand inhabitants. This picturesque place on the False Bay also served the Dutch East Indian Company as an anchor site during the winter months. Goods were carried here with ox wagons and then shipped via boat to the neighbouring Simons Town.

From around 1820 to 1840 was known for whaling but this ended after the last whales were caught and the species had been wiped out. After this, Kalk Bay was still a popular fishing port. Today, the fishing industry – besides tourism – is still the most important source of income.

Activities in Kalk Bay (False Bay)

The Kalk Bay harbour is a great place to watch the incoming fishing boats, to visit the lighthouse, buy local souvenirs or enjoy a meal in one of the fine dining restaurants.

For surfers, this location on the False Bay is also idealas the waves are particularly big.

There are several tidal pools in Kalk Bay and ist surroundings – perfect to cool off on a hot day.

During a stroll in Kalk Bay, you can discover art galleries, jewellers and antique shops. In the hills above the village, you can visit many sandstone caves.

The railway line between Cape Town and Simon’s Town runs directly along the Kalk Bay coast. You could enjoy a short train ride between the little towns along the False Bay as it follows the coastline from Muizenberg to Simon’s Town (please only buy first-class train tickets due to safety reasons).

Eating out in Kalk Bay

The harbour area in Kalk Bay boasts many restaurants and bistros that offer freshly caught fish from the False Bay. The ocean views from the terraces and decks are spectacular. These harbour restaurants are not only great for a delicious lunch but you should come back for a romantic dinner in the evening or a cocktail during sunset.

Kalk Bay has a few very good restaurants that can be recommended.

  • Harbour House (mainly seafood, fine dining)
  • Live Bait (smaller menu – also prawns, calamari or mussels)
  • Tigers Milk (burger, pizza)
  • Lucky Fish (fish or calamari with chips/salad)

Kalk Bay – ideal for visitors

Muizenberg and Simon‘s Town are each a 10-minute drive from Kalk Bay. Simon’s Town also has a nice little town centre and a harbour with restaurants and cafés.

In Simon’s Town, you can also find the famous Boulder‘s Beach where you can watch the African Penguins waddling or swimming in their natural habitat.
