De Waterkant

De Waterkant is a trendy suburb right in the middle of Cape Town known as a heaven for foodies and the LGBTQ+ community as well as its nightlife.

The tiny suburb is located between the city centre, the historic Bo Kaap and Green Point, meaning it is close to many activities and attractions as well as Table Mountain.

Activities in De Waterkant

At the centre of the chic neighbourhood is the Cape Quarter Lifestyle Village, an upmarket shopping centre with fashion boutiques, art galleries and vibey restaurants. The surrounding leafy streets are lined with colourful historic homes housing trendy cafés, stylish shops and guesthouses.

The neighbourhood is also known for its buzzing nightlife with an abundance of trendy cocktail bars, dance clubs and a hot steam bath. Nicknamed the “pick suburb”, the nightlife offers a great variety of places to party for the LGBTQ+ community. And the best part – everything is within walking distance.

Every March, De Waterkant becomes even more colourful than it already is, when the Cape Town Carnival puts on its shows with great music, flamboyant costumes and culturally diverse art.

As a legacy of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the fan walk leads pedestrians from the Cape Town station to the stadium in Green Point. A bridge takes you across the busy road as you enter De Waterkant. Right there, you see the Prestwich Memorial and Garden, a place to remember some of South Africa’s history and to enjoy some good coffee.

The vibrant suburb is a heaven for food lovers. Wherever you go, you will find a place to eat. No matter if you feel like a burger in Wild West themed surroundings, fancy Italian food, tapas, sushi, Indian or a traditional Cape Malay meal, you will not be disappointed.

The same goes for the large variety of bars – how about smoking a shisha in a Cuban bar, drinking shots from a topless waiter’s belly, while training your own six pack with laughter at one of the comedy shows featuring some of Cape Town’s well known drag queens, or sipping a cocktail after a quick dip into the pool overlooking Table Mountain, Signal Hill and the city centre from the roof top bar at the Lifestyle Village.

If you enjoy a buzzing nightlife, love good food and meeting outgoing people, while being in the heart of Cape Town, then De Waterkant is the right place for you.
